What’s happening in Barcelona:

On the closing day of GSS in Barcelona, the students and local instructors were keen on assembling the node 1:1 final prototype using augmented reality tools combined with more traditional construction techniques.
During the day, the GSS participants had the chance to present their project proposals to a global jury of professionals and globally connected with the rest of the GSS international nodes. After the students defended the projects developed, a diploma celebration took place at IAAC as a closure to this amazing trip into Advanced Infrastructure.

What’s happening in Monterrey:

Previous days in Monterrey, the GSS participants and professors of the workshop combined their knowledge on Architecture, Interior, Industrial and Interactive Design in order to create the final project of the node.

During the course of GSS19, they merged augmented reality with traditional construction techniques by superimposing a computer-generated image, which in this case was the final model, on the user´s view of the real world. This technique reduced the chances for mistakes during the assembly process and encouraged the GSS participants to have a key role during the hole process.

What’s happening in Dubai:

Previous days in Dubai, the GSS participants became familiar with the idea of sustainability taking into consideration environment conservation and balance between economic and social development as a key factor to improve people´s quality of life and ensure happiness for the community.

Also they began to explore the intersection of math and science with our organic world. In this sense, they observed the patterns throughout our natural world as spirals, fractals, tessellations, stripes or even simple symmetries that are intricately connected to natural laws of mathematics, physics, and biology. Day ten was about developing geometries and forms through the origami technique inspired by the patterns of our natural world.

What’s happening in Melbourne:

Previous days in Melbourne, the GSS participants were introduced to the central topics of the GSS Melbourne node brief: digital design and bio-fabrication. In this sense, students started to approach parametric design tools, digital fabrication techniques and laboratory science equipment in order to investigate geometric, informed by biology and propose functional components grown from bio-materials.

This year, the GSS participants are keen on multidisciplinary learning in design and biology, experimentation and speculation through coupling digital coding with biological cultivating. At the end of the programme, they will review their proposals through the spectrum of low energy, renewable and polyvalent alternatives to existing paradigms of building and manufacturing.

What’s happening in Monterrey:

Previous days in Monterrey, the GSS participants were introduced to Augmented Reality through Rhino and Grasshopper softwares and became familiar with the idea of “Digital Builders”. The main theme of this years GSS course focuses on the use of technology as a bridge between designers and builders.

Being not mandatory the use of blueprints nowadays, the constructors are now allowed to see what they are going to build step by step. Moreover by superimposing a computer-generated image on a user’s view of the real world, it is possible to reduce the chances for mistakes and misunderstandings. After all the aim of the workshop is the exploration of the intersection between design of complex geometries, augmented reality and traditional construction techniques. For this reason day seven was completely dedicated to computational design iterations and prototyping.

What’s happening in Manila:

Previous days in Manila, the participants were introduced to Advanced Architecture, which is interdisciplinary, multiscalar, human-centered and research-based. Also they became familiar with Rhino and Grasshopper softwares to start designing through parametrics, in preparation for the fabrication of a public pavilion in estero barangays. Day six started with a lecture on bamboo architecture and design by the experts on the topic Christian Salandanan and Lyle La. Later the participants went for a foot survey, to get to know the site and the community. They deduced the lack of relationship with the environment as unwanted garbage are thrown away and the estero is the chosen receptacle. For this reason the goal is to create iterations of “pavilions with their narratives” that can activate public spaces, mirror community activities, suggest interaction and develop values such as respect, community building and sharing.

What’s happening in India:

Previous days in India, the participants had the opportunity to explore form finding strategies through theoretical and practical scripting sessions through computational design tools. Moreover they investigated material behaviors and its structural implications through a KUKA 6 Axis robot. Also they focused on robotic tools and scale model making, which later on will be built as a series of digitally fabricated architectural elements in 1:1 scale. The 5th day started with an introduction to Robotic fabrication, its implication on exiting architecture and applied to the construction scenario. The Robotic seminar was led by Kunal Chadha, Indian architect and Digital fabrication and Robotics expert from the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia (IaaC).

What’s happening in Istanbul:

Previous days in Istanbul the participants were introduced to data collection and analysis of the urban environment of the city using open source technologies. In particularly they started to operate data sensing tools in order to collect data on urban conditions such as temperature, light, humidity, air pollution, noise and other key parameters. This was achieved by creating a workflow in collaboration with the tutors, Seda Tugutlu, Mehmet Berk Bostanci and Gokhan Karakus and by collecting data from various parts of Istanbul. From their findings, subsequently, will be provided the first open data source on Istanbul’s environment produced by non-governmental agencies.

What’s happening in Beirut:
The third day of the GSS19 in Beirut started with a Grasshopper tooling session. The participants were introduced to creative thinking through parametric design and motivated to use different technics in order to produce complicated digital models. Later an online lecture took place by Elisabetta Carnevale, who holds a postgraduate degree in Earthen Architecture from CRAterre – ENSA Grenable. The topics touched during the lecture focused on how to build through the use of natural materials and the related possibilities in architectural design. The day closed with a prototyping session.

What’s happening in Barcelona:
The second day of the GSS19 in Barcelona started with a visit in Valldaura labs, Iaac’s campus that is used as a testing ground for innovation that features the latest technologies in the fields of energy, information and fabrication.  The participants had the chance to explore multiple ongoing projects and also meet with the lab experts. Later they were introduced to some drone flying technics in theory and in practice with the help of the drone experts team. The goal was to collect data of the main building and its surrounding environment that was used later for the digital recreation of the space through Agisoft Metashape programme. The day closed with two inspiring presentations, the first held by Eugenio Bettucchi explaining the Romi Robotics for Microfarms european project  and Woodwose – Master in Robotics and Advanced Construction project, presented by Andrzej Foltman, Jean-Nicolas Alois Dackiw, Filip Bielicki.
