What’s happening today in NEW YORK:

GSS New York node program focuses on creating ‘body architectures’ conceived as mechanisms to augmenting the body in relation to the vertical architecture, urban spaces, and landscape systems that form the environment of New York city. These wearable devices serve to bring a hyper-awareness to the senses, as closed-loop cybernetic systems that utilize ‘digitized’ biometric and environmental data through the use of computational tools, sensing technologies, and actuation.
The design of body architectures requires hybrid design, merging multi-disciplinary topics related to art, biology, biotechnology, design, fashion, architecture, landscape architecture, urbanism, computation, fabrication, and robotics. For this reason, GSS New York students are undergoing a design processes that involves making, tinkering, hacking, coding, data collection, 3D scanning, digital fabrication, and working with several physical computing technologies to explore new possibilities for wearable body architectures that evolve human-machine-environment interactions.

What’s happening today in MELBOURNE:

The GSS Melbourne node seeks future solutions to the environmental impact of a world of cities developing at unprecedented growth rates. Support systems struggle to keep up with demand, existing built environment and manufacturing models exploit natural resources, physical and biological. The GSS program started with a biology lesson, examining mycelium underneath a microscope to gain a greater understanding of the construction material they will be exploring over the next two weeks.
It is imperative to seek a new paradigm that finds an equilibrium between the natural and the artificial in an effort to reduce non-renewable consumption. The GSS Melbourne program will take a multidisciplinary approach and draw inspiration, technology and knowledge from biology, algorithmic design and digital fabrication.

What’s happening in BARCELONA:

The first day of the GSS18 started with the introduction to the workshop “Metallic Space” brief, in which participants will explore form-finding strategies through digital tools and scale model making how to build a series of digitally fabricated architectural elements in 1:1 scale.
Later on, students were introduced to software such as Rhinoceros and Grasshopper 3D by Rodrigo Aguirre, followed by the first Global Lecture where Dr. Petra Gruber, an architect with a strong interest in inter/transdisciplinary design, shared her knowledge straight from Melbourne to all the participating nodes of this GSS18 edition.
In the afternoon GSS students were divided into groups to visit the sites where the proposals will take place: Plaza dels Angels, Plaza Sant Jaume, and Plaza del Mar. The main task was to map the site according to 2 very important factors: flow of people and activities. The following days, GSS participants began to explore the potential of parametric design through Form Finding Protocols during computational design class. The first drafts from the site analysis were discussed in group along with the GSS tutors and advisers. The third day followed with another Global Lecture, this time live from Barcelona to all the nodes network, where Tomas Diez shared his knowledge on Digital Fabrication and its implications for the future of cities. Finally, Cristian Rizzuti, GSS Barcelona instructor, introduced Physical Computing to the participants, where Arduino will be embedded in their proposals.

The IAAC Global Summer School is thrilled to launch an InstagramContest directed to new generations of architects, designers, and urban planners. To take part in the contest you should post on Instagram, within May 7th 2018, your vision of the Public Space of the Future, described by a combination of digital and physical stimuli.

+ Tag two friends who could be interested in joining IAAC Global Summer School?;

+ Specify in the caption for which Node you are applying for by adding the hashtag #IAACGSS[Nodename]2018 (e.g. #IAACGSSParis2018).

The Nodes which are taking part to the contest are Barcelona, Paris, Querétaro and Quito.

The image has to be an original representation produced by the applicant. Is not allowed to submit work of third parties. Each image is valid for one Node application.? By participating in this competition each applicant accepts the rules and conditions stated in this document.

PRIZES

A number of images will be selected and re-posted on the official Instagram account of IAAC Global Summer School. Among these, each Node will select three winners of a 50% discount on the GSS‘ tuition fee. Those scholarships will be assigned by the local teams of GSS instructors.

In parallel to that, the author of the image which will receive more likes on IAAC GSS‘Instagram will receive one full scholarship for the selected Node.
