IAAC GLOBAL SUMMER SCHOOL

GLOBAL BRIEF - GSS19 BECOMING

As we move towards the future, we embrace evolution, knowing that everything we interact with in our everyday lives will improve, be enhanced in its performance and potentially customised by its users. Features shift, defaults disappear, menus change. In this constant motion, it is fundamental to recognize transitions, but also to anticipate mutations, and shape alternative solutions.  As Kevin Kelly says, the Future we are moving towards is the product of a process – a becoming – that we can see right now.

More than half of the world’s population has already chosen to live in cities, a phenomena that is expected to rise to 70% by 2050. High impact consumption patterns, environmental degradation, and persistent inequity are only a few of the issues that affect contemporary cities. However, cities also offer, per capita and in a limited space, high access to infrastructure and services, including water, energy and mobility, making them fertile terrain to provide realistic answers to some of the global challenges we are to face in the near future.

The IaaC Global Summer School 2019 will question some of these impending challenges, envisioning how we can reconfigure infrastructure, manage resources, establishing new paradigms for cities, buildings, matter and citizens. Through its distributed and multidisciplinar network of Nodes, a global team of researchers, students, and institutions will define and prototype actions for the application of Advanced Digital Design Strategies as essentials means for this change.

GSS STRUCTURE

IAAC Global Summer School (GSS) is a full-time two week summer course happening every july, which provides both practical and theoretical knowledge to participants. The program is led by expert tutors, combined with lectures by renowned professionals and academics relevant to the topics to be treated during the course. These will be broadcasted in the different node-cities, all globally connected. Participants will join a global agenda and an international laboratory at their disposal to test their design hypothesis, understanding how design conclusions derived locally can be tested and evolved globally in the different cities where other teams reside.

IAAC Network & GSS NODES

IAAC has an active alumni community distributed around the world allowing a decentralized expansion of IAAC expertise and knowledge. The constant involvement of the community in IAAC activities keeps the connections strong and fertile. IAAC GSS19 aims to empower the bonds with the community members, therefore places them in strategic positions which allows Global Summer School to take place simultaneously in different Nodes – cities around the world: Barcelona, New York City, Queretaro, Moscow, Tehran, Chandigarh, Beirut, Budapest, Shanghai, Quito and more.

GSS18 BARCELONA - CENTRAL NODE

GSS FOCUS

Thanks to a solid nodes platform made by an international team of experts located in key cities around the globe, the GSS participants will engage in a global program with the aim of developing different local projects embedded in diverse local conditions.

The main disciplines of GSS explore the application of new technologies in design referring to ongoing research agendas in robotics, physical computing, parametric design, digital fabrication, prototyping and other emerging design techniques.
